Friday, May 21, 2021 DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY THROUGH 0200Z May 22, 2021 SMOKE: Eastern Canada/Eastern US/Western Atlantic… Remnant smoke from wildfires across central Manitoba was observed extending eastward out toward southern Greenland, with some having been drawn down across the Maritime Provinces, the US East Coast, and the Sargasso Sea south and west of Bermuda. The smoke is likely to continue moving east across the North Atlantic, with the drawn down smoke to be incorporated into a developing cyclone northeast of Bermuda. Due to extensive cloud cover, wildfire activity could not be analyzed in central Manitoba. However, continued activity may still be occurring and would likely be moving south from the parent fires. Southwestern Canada/Western CONUS… A likely remnant area of moderate density smoke was observed extending from western Oregon northeastward into north-central Saskatchewan. Due to extensive cloud cover, the parent fire is not clear, but two persistent fires in southern Nevada could be to blame. These two fires were active yesterday and are actively producing moderate density smoke today. Southern Mexico/Central American Pacific Coast… Widespread fire activity across southern Mexico and scattered activity across northern Central America, along with remnant smoke from widespread activity over the same areas over the past few days, were all contributing to a thin to moderate density layer of smoke blanketing much of the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Guatemala, southern and eastern Mexico, the western Gulf of Mexico, and the Bay of Campeche. DUST: Caribbean... A thin density plume of Saharan dust covers the central and eastern parts of the Caribbean Sea. Four Corners… Strong south-southwesterly wind were observed transporting dust from northeastern Arizona and eastern Utah across these areas, as well as far western Colorado and southwestern Wyoming. Dust is being transported nearly 400 miles from near the Mogollon Rim to the Uinta Mountain Range just south of the Utah-Wyoming Border. Another stream of dust was observed emanating north-northeastward from Sevier Lake in west-central Utah.
